Chapter 26 – Ana

As soon as he walked in on Monday, Danny called me into his office beaming. One of our major customers called him on Friday afternoon and raved about my handling of their potential litigation case. Danny was excited about the call and wanted to let me know. It had been busy, but I was learning the ropes and getting to know my clients well.

Walking out of his office, I felt reinvigorated. Danny’s appreciation gave me the confidence I sought today after feeling down on myself. I proudly walked to my desk, and suddenly, the eighty-seven emails I had didn't seem as hard to tackle. Today was going to be an inbox-cleaning day.

Around eleven, I decided to have an early lunch. Before heading down, I dropped off Wyatt’s jacket, which I had kept for too long, at the front desk of his office. I wrote a note on it since I forgot he wasn’t there.

I called Harper once I was out in the courtyard. She was working from home today and begged me for the details of the fundraiser, but I had been trying to process everything before calling her because I genuinely didn’t know what to say. Sitting on the back of Wyatt’s truck, eating cheesecake, and revealing one of the worst moments of my life to him was not where I thought my Saturday night would end.

“Finally!” she said, picking up the phone. “I was about to send for a search party, and by a search party, I mean I was going to have my mom break your door down and force you to call me.”

"Sorry, Harp. There's just a…lot…to tell."

"I know! So, you better start because I have a client call in an hour."

I chuckled and walked her through my night, starting with the moment my mom called.

"I will never understand your mom's obsession with hating everything you wear," she groaned. "I saw the picture you sent me, and Ana, you looked so hot!"

"Thanks, Harp. You know, I felt pretty good, all things considered."

My recounting of George's actions disgusted her, but she almost blew out my eardrum when I told her about Jane. She had officially gone full high school on me.

“I think you were meant to move home and find Wyatt,” she said. “Are you going to ask him out?”

“No, Harp. Remember, I’m going to leave things as they are.”

“But why?!”

"I don’t think he’s interested in me like that,” I sighed.

“That’s BS, and you know it,” Harper stated. “The man took you to a fancy event, saved you from a creep, bought you cheesecake, and held you while you cried. I would say he’s interested.”

“I thought he would kiss me in the kitchen and on the tailgate, but he didn’t. He’s had a couple of opportunities and nothing, Harp.” In the instances that his gaze flickered to my lips, I thought he would kiss me, but that was wishful thinking on my part. “Maybe I’m just not good enough for him.”

“For the love of Jesus, Annie, you know that’s not true.
